When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do free essay sample
ââ¬Å"When in Rome, do as the Romans doâ⬠is the famous axiom of St Ambrose, the very famous bishop of Milan in the 4th century. He advises that people should follow the traditional customs and decency of country where they choose to live. The knowledge about culture and customs of another country bring many benefits for immigrants. They can know the positive things they should do and the negative things they must avoid. This knowledge also makes them feel more freedom in a strange country.Nowadays, many people have been using this axiom as a motto to achieve the success in their life, especially immigrants and overseas students. However, some people do not agree with this axiom. This essay considers the statement and argues that it is correct. Some people from the opposition force are temporary visitors as overseas students or businessmen and they say it is not necessary for them to follow the customs and behaviour of their hosts. We will write a custom essay sample on When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One of their reasons is since they are always busy with their works, they do not have enough time to learn all the customs and how to behave in the right way in other countries. Moreover, their time spends to study or work overseas is just about two or three years, so it is not matter whether they follow the customs and behaviour of the foreign countries where they live. However, both businessmen and overseas students cannot work or study without communication with local people.Overseas student often must contact with teacher and classmates, while businessmen often do business with local companies or local customers. Therefore, trying to get used to customs will help them to accommodate to new environment. Even if overseas students and businessmen just study and work for a short time in other countries, they still have to understand the local community. It is very helpful for their study and business. Moreover, following the custom shows the respect for local people, and it helps visitors receive the admiration from host. Some immigrants living in other countries still do not have much knowledge about the customs and behaviour of their hosts because they live and work in the area in which most people are from their countries. Therefore, they always follow their own customs and behaviour and they think it is not a need to understand the customs and behaviour of their hosts. In fact, although they only work and live in the area in which most people from their countries, they are still a part of society. They still have to respect and follow the customs and behaviour of the hosts.Furthermore, they cannot isolate themselves from the native people. Following the customs and behaviour of host will help them in integrating with the local community. In addition, knowing and accepting the customs and law of the new country will help them in avoiding mistakes and crimes. Some immigrants believe that following all customs of new countries will provides them more opportunities to find good jobs. However, every country is still remains few customs and behaviour which are unfit with modern life. We should avoid those customs and behaviour. In conclusion, not only temporary visitors but also immigrant should follow the customs and behaviour of their hosts because it helps them accommodate with new environment. In my opinion, following the customs and behaviour of hosts is very important for every overseas student like me. It make students feel more comfortable with new live, they can make friends quickly. Moreover, knowledge about law and custom of new countries, where I will live, help to avoid misunderstanding, mistakes, and crimes. However, immigrant should not follow the old-fashioned customs which are unfit with modern life.

The rapid evolution of a style characterized by ca Essay Example For Students
The rapid evolution of a style characterized by ca Essay nvases filled with swirling, bright colors depicting people and nature is the essence of Vincent Van Goghs extremely prolific but tragically short career. Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Holland, son of a Dutch Protestant pastor and eldest of six children. His favorite brother Theo was four years younger. When Vincent was twelve to sixteen years old, he went to a boarding school. That next year he was sent to The Hague to work for an uncle who was an art dealer, but van Gogh was unsuited for a business career.Actually, his early interests were in literature and religion. Very dissatisfied with the way people made money and imbued with a strong sense of mission, he worked for a while as a lay preacher among proverty-stricken miners.Van Gogh represented the religious society that trained him in a poor coal-mining district in Belgium. Vincent took his work so seriously that he went without food and other necessities so he could give more to the poor. The missionary society objected to Vincents behavior and fired him in 1879. Heartsick, van Gogh struggled to keep going socially and fin!ancially, yet he was always rejected by other people, and felt lost and forsaken. Then, in 1880, at age 27, he became obsessed with art. The intensity he had for religion, he now focused on art. His early drawings were crude but strong and full of feeling: It is a hard and a difficult struggle to learn to draw well I have worked like a slave .His first paintings had been still lifes and scenes of peasants at work. That which fills my head and heart must be expressed in drawings and in picturesIm in a rage of work.In 1881, he moved to Etten. He very much liked pictures of peasant life and labor. Jean-Francois Millet was the first to paint this as a main theme and his works influenced van Gogh. His first paintings here were crude but improving. Van Goghs progress was interrupted by an intense love for his widowed cousin Kee Vos. On her decisive rejection of him he p ursued her to Amsterdam, only to suffer more humiliation. This opportunity to be taught by him encouraged van Gogh to settle in Den Hague with Theos support. When van Gogh left Den Hague in September 1883 for the northern fenland of Drenth, he did so with mixed feelings. He spent hours wandering the countryside, making sketches of the landscape, but began to feel isolated and concerned about the future. He had rented a little attic in a house but found it melancholy, and was depressed with the quality of his equipment. Everything is too miserable, too insufficient, too dilapidated. Physically and mentally unable to cope with these conditions any longer, he left for his parents new home in Nuenen in December 1883. Van Gogh had a phase in which he loved to paint birds and birds nests. This phase did not last long. It only lasted until his fathers death six months later. The Family Bible which he painted just before leaving his house for good, six months after h is fathers death in 1885, must have meant a great deal to him. Van Gogh had broken with Christianity when he was fired from the missionary which proved to be the most painful experience of his life, and one from which he never quite recovered. At Nuenen, van Gogh gave active physical toil a remarkable reality. Its impact went far beyond what the realist Gustave Corbet had achieved and beyond even the quasi-religious images of Jean-Francois Millet. He made a number of studies of peasant hands and heads before embarking on what would be his most important work at Nuenen. The pinnacle of his work in Holland was The Potato Eaters, a scene painted in April 1885 that shows the working day to be over. It was the last and most ambitious painting of his pre-Impressionist period, 1880-1885.When van Gogh painted the The Potato Eaters, he had not yet discovered the importance of color. Van Gogh went to Antwerp in November 1885, partly to escape local gossip. He vainly attempted to make money fr om painting portraits, townscapes, and trades mens signs. Then he enrolled at the Antwerp Academy to make use of the live models. Shortage of money led to van Goghs undernourishment and acute physical distress. When van Gogh enrolled at the Academy in January 1886, he had just finished drawings that one day would be compared to the masters. Although willing to learn, he astonished fellow students by refusing to abandon the rapidity and boldness of his own methods.Possibly because of this, he was downgraded to the beginner class and consequently he left for Paris to live with his brother. .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 , .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .postImageUrl , .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 , .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:hover , .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:visited , .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:active { border:0!important; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:active , .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596 .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8cc32b67d7b8bbf9289a62ad6cf7d596:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Remember the Titans Paper Sample Essay It was through his brother Theo and an art gallery devoted to living artists that he discovered the Impressionists, and became familiar with the new art movements developing at the time. Before Paris, van Gogh had not even known who the Impressionists were.He admired pictures by Degas andMonet and through Toulouse-Lautrec he was in touch with the local members of the art world. He was also influenced by Japanese print makers. The Impressionists discovered Japanese prints long before van Goghs arrival. These prints influenced him in his use of harmonized color.Van Gogh pinned them on his walls, and they appear in the background of some of his paintings. While refining his technique as painter in Paris, the home of the Impressionist school, he soon found that his real affinity was not for this school but for three men who had left their company to carry the torch of revolt a step further: for Cezanne, usually considered the most monstrous painter among the outcasts, for Gauguin, under the combined influence of Cezanne and of the Orient; and for Seraut, obsessed with experimental vision of art. Until 1886, he had only known the Dutch painters and a handful of French landscape painters including Millet and the Barbizon group. Now, for the first time, he saw work by Delacroix (whom he later said had more influence on him than the Impressionists) and by Pissaro, Czanne, Renoir and Sisley. Light, color and brilliance burst upon him. He went about the streets with a palette of bright colors, as delighted by the cosmopolitan bustle of the city as Manet, Monet, Renoir, and the others had been twenty years before him.Van G oghs Impressionist phase lasted two years. Although it was vitally important for his development, he had to integrate it with the style of his earlier years before his genius could fully unfold. Paris opened his eyes to the senses and beauty of the visible world and taught him the pictorial language of the color patch, but painting continued to be a vessel for his personal emotions. To investigate this spiritual reality with the ne!w means at this command, he went to Arles in the south of France. It was there, between 1888 and 1889, that he produced his greatest pictures. While Czanne and Seurat were making a more severe, classical art out of the impressionists style, van Gogh felt Impressionist art was pretty decorations and did nothing to evoke the sorrow of the human soul. He led the way in a different direction. He believed that impressionism did not allow the artist enough freedom to express his inner feelings. Since this was his main concern, he is sometimes called an expressio nist.Expressionism is the idea of emotional spontaneity in painting. The portrait of Dr. Gachet is a perfect example of his melancholy, proto-Expressionist late work.By setting certain colors side by side he achieved effects of unearthly splendor. To color he brought dignity and form, the opposite of the abstractions into which Monet was heading and which seemed the inevitable limit of Impressionist techniques. Van Gogh thought it was the color, not the form, that determined the expressive content of his pictures.Three painters of genius emerged, overlapping the Impressionists in time and manner, whose names have become synonymous with the post-Impressionists movement: Cezanne, Gauguin, and van Gogh. Between them they set European painting on a path which turned Impressionism into something solid and durable, like the art of the museums, a return in effect, to the main stream, but with minds alight with discovery and purpose. These three, as well as Mile Bernard who was a friend of van Gogh, all believed in the importance of color!to express the state of mind of the model represented.Work of the Post-Impressionists reveals a freely expressive use of color and form. In 1888, while living at Arles, he began to use the swirling brush strokes and intense yellows, greens, and blues. He loved bright colors especially yellow because of the sun which was bright in southern France and he painted what he saw and felt.He painted in colors with bright hues and high value.Vincent would sometimes put paints on his canvas with his palette knife or right from the tube and mix it around with his fingers which would make it quite coarse. In Arles he attached the greatest importance to his portraits, although he also painted many landscapes.Later, in 1890, he devoted his main energy to landscape painting. In southern France van Gogh lived for a time with Paul Gauguin, whom he had met in Paris. But after two months they had violent arguments, culminating in a quarrel in which va n Gogh threatened Gauguin with a razor. The same night, in a deep remorse, van Gogh cut off part of his own ear. This episode marked the beginning of a periodic insanity that plagued him until his death. On May 8, 1889, he was admitted to St. Rmy Hospital as a voluntary patient. Dr. Peyron interviewed him and entered in the register that van Gogh Suffers from fits which last from fifteen days to a month. During these fits the patient is victim to terrifying terrors and on several occasions has attempted to poison himself.During the intervals between fits he is perfectly quiet and paints ardently. He was possibly having a seizure when he threatened to kill Paul Gauguin. Since his death, investigators have come to feel that his fits were due to epilepsy.Despairing of a cure and fearing !he would no longer be able to paint, van Gogh committed suicide in July 1890. He felt very deeply that art alone made his life worth living. We know a good deal about his inner life as a result of a mas sive, stirring and deeply moving autobiography in the form of hundreds of letters written to his brother Theo. The letters he sent to his brother include many eloquent descriptions of his choice of hues and the emotional meaning he attached to them. In one of his letters to Theo he wrote the following: I do not intend to spare myself, nor to avoid emotions or difficulties Idont care much whether I live a longer or shorter timeThe world concernsme insofar as I feel a certain indebtedness and duty toward it because I have walked this earth for thirty years, and, out of gratitude, want toleave some souvenir in the shape of drawings and pictures not made to pleasea certain taste in art, but to express a sincere human feeling. Gatsbys Pursuit Of The American Dream Essays - The Great Gatsby
Gatsby's Pursuit Of The American Dream Essays - The Great Gatsby Gatsby's Pursuit Of The American Dream Gatsby's Pursuit of the American Dream The Great Gatsby, a novel by Scott Fitzgerald, is about the American Dream, and the downfall of those who attempt to reach its impossible goals. The attempt to capture the American Dream is used in many novels. This dream is different for different people; but, in The Great Gatsby, for Jay, the dream is that through wealth and power, one can acquire happiness. To get this happiness Jay must reach into the past and relive an old dream; and, in order to do this, he must have wealth and power. The American Dream had always been based on the idea that each person no matter who he or she is can become successful in life by his or her hard work. The dream also brought about the idea of a self-reliant man, a hard worker, making a successful living for him or herself. The Great Gatsby is about what happened to the American Dream in the 1920s, a time period when the many people with newfound wealth and the need to flaunt it had corrupted the dream. The pursuit of the American Dream is the one motivation for accomplishing one's goals, however when combined with wealth the dream becomes nothing more than selfishness. Jay Gatsby, the main character of the story, is one character that longs for the past. Surprisingly, he spends most of his adult life trying to recapture it and, finally, dies in this pursuit. In the past, Gatsby had a love affair with the attractive young Daisy. Knowing he could not marry her because of the difference in their social status, he leaves her to gain wealth to reach her standards. Once he acquires wealth, he moves near to Daisy, Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay (p83), and throws extravagant parties, hoping by chance she might show up at one of them. He, himself, does not attend his parties but watches them from a distance. When this dream doesn't fall into place like he planned, he asks around if anyone knows her. Soon, he meets Nick Carraway, a cousin of Daisy, who agrees to set up a meeting, He wants to knowif you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over (p83). Gatsby's personal dream symbolizes the larger American Dream where all have the opportunity to get what they want. Later, in the Plaza Hotel, Jay still believes that Daisy loves him. He is convinced of this and even takes the blame for Myrtle's death. Was Daisy driving? Yes. But of course I'll say I was (p151). He also watches Daisy as she returns home to make sure her husband doesn't harm her. How long are you going to wait? All night if necessary (p152). Gatsby cannot accept that the past is gone and done with. He believes that he acted for her and beyond his personal interest and that that should guarantee his success. Nick attempts to show Jay that his dream is unobtainable, but Gatsby innocently replies to N ick's comment by saying, Yes you can, old sport (p141). This shows the confidence that Jay has in fulfilling his American Dream. For Jay, his American Dream is not material possessions, although it plays a big part in the fulfillment of his true American Dream, Daisy. Gatsby does not rest until his American Dream is finally fulfilled. However, it never comes about and he ends up paying the ultimate price for it. Gatsby's own characteristics, especially his obsession, contributed to his fate. Despite his attitude toward Daisy and her friends who are rich and play polo together, he, too, has been drawn in by the lure of money and fame. Unable to control his obsessive desire to have daisy, he cares little about the means by which he acquires the money to marry her. He associates with known criminals, appears to be involved with bootlegging, and is rumored to have killed a man. Finally, he lies about himself and his family to get Nick's help for his quest. The means he uses to achieve his goal ends up to be everything that he despises about the people

Finance and Asset Management Report - Essay Example 2012, 2011 and 2011. This performance evaluation has been conducted by using ratio analysis which has been the most effective performance evaluation tool in terms of past performance trends. The comparison of the financial performance of Great Portland is also made in collaboration with one of the industry competitor named as Songbird over the same financial periods. Following are the five broader areas of ratio analysis namely profitability, liquidity, efficiency, solvency and investment under which the performance evaluation has been conducted (Brigham et al, 2008). Profitability Analysis The profitability picture of Great Portland provides a better view if the past performance is taken into consideration. It can be observed that the net profit margin of Portland has improved massively as it just started some momentum in the year 2010 (Great Portland Estates, 2012). However, in the year 2011, the firm bounced back on significant note and continued its better performance in the year 2012 as well. Very similar trend can also be observed if operating profit margin is taken into consideration, which started peaking in the year 2010. However, operating profit margin for Great Portland has been on an increasing trend. If these two ratios of Great Portland are compared with Songbird, it can be noted that Songbird was performing well on these notes until 2012 when it drowned into losses (Songbird Estates plc, 2011). However, operating profit margin is still positive for Songbird in the last year but it has declined severely in the last three years. If return generated by the assets of the firm, are taken into consideration, Great Portland has improved its performance in this area as well such that from 13% ROA, it has increased to the ROA of 17% which is a very delightful sign for the company until 2012 when it declined to 7.9%. Likewise, return on shareholdersââ¬â¢ equity has also performed well as it has increased from negative 17%% to positive 23%, which is a t remendous indicator that the equity of the company is making good profits until 2012 when it reduced down to 12%. Conversely, these two ratios for Songbird have again showed sluggish performance over the past three years as their performance in terms of both ROA and ROE has shifted into negative zone, which is an alarming sine for Songbird. Ratios 2012 2012 2011 2011 2010 2010 Great Portland Songbird Great Portland Songbird Great Portland Songbird Profitability Net Profit Margin 339.61% -33.47% 407.68% 146.40% 349.89% 63.57% Operating Profit Margin 378.56% 82.53% 432.13% 93.36% 404.92% 116.46% Return on Assets 7.90% -1.37% 17.05% 6.86% 13.17% 3.28% Return on Equity 12.53% -5.09% 23.38% 24.00% 17.84% 16.99% Liquidity Analysis The liquidity analysis of both the companies is conducted rather in a brief manner as only one ratio has been selected for this purpose, which is current ratio. Current ratio mainly depicts the amount of current assets available in order to pay off $1 current li ability of the company (Watson, 2009). If the current ratio of Great Portland is taken into consideration, it can be noted that this figure has been observed consistently on a declining trend such that the current ratio of the company was 2.59, which depicts that the company had only ?2.59 in order to pay o

Women gets more than 70 percent of masters, doctoral and professional degrees collectively but holds less than 20 percent of full time positions as university professors. US is ranked 85th in the world on the basis of share women hold in national legislative body. Only 9 percent of the largest cities in US have female mayors. He further mentions with grief that out of 500 fortune companies more than 25 percent had no female executive officers. Even in the film industry only one out of 4 female nominations for the best director won the Oscar, whereas; 77 percent of Oscars were gone to men. Williams further highlighted women as higher scorers on the scale of various leadership traits designed by Pew Center study, Social and Demographic Survey. In his view; despite of better grades, traits, potential and creativity the conditions of women are diminishing day by day in every industry and sector o f US. Poznerââ¬â¢s View Jennifer Pozner, founder of Women in Media and News, is a feminist who has channelized all her education, expertise and energy in enlightening the status of women especially in media. She is of the view that; women are treated as ââ¬Å"second class citizensâ⬠in TV channels. ... eep trenches settled by male dominated society, though women have gained a humongous visibility in the media but still they lack those decision making positions which enjoy the authority of crafting peopleââ¬â¢s mind. Pozner said; ââ¬Å"Control of the media is the single most important issue of our time, the corporate-controlled media shape and inform our collective ideas about people, politics, and public policy, the corporate-dominated mass media are the key to why our fast-moving culture is so slow to change, stereotypes are so persistent, and the power structure is so entrenchedâ⬠Pozner believes that Media has the power to change minds and attitudes bus since the decision making power resides within the masculine community thus; males decide what to inject in the minds of people. The vibrant visibility of females in the news room of TV channels and increased female reporters and correspondent corps is a buzz view created to portray that there exist no ceilings for women and women are given equivalence in all the industries and sectors. To Pozner, media world is a ââ¬Å"big lieâ⬠and it is spreading a false feminist death syndrome by creating an impression that women are getting what they deserve to get which is unfortunately not the case. Russoââ¬â¢s View Russo said in his speech; ââ¬Å"We're so busy putting out fires right now, that we don't have the time to talk to each other and strategize and plan for the next wave, and the next day, and next month and the next week and the next year. And, we're going to have to find the time to do that in the next few months. And, we have to commit ourselves to doing that. And then, after we kick the shit out of this disease, we're all going to be alive to kick the shit out of this system, so that this never happens again.â⬠According

This coursework assignment is to investigate resistance Essay Example for Free
This coursework assignment is to investigate resistance Essay To investigate it, we must first understand it. What is it? Where does it come from? The most fundamental basis to understanding resistance is to know about current. Electric current is a flow of electric charges. Like water in a heating system, the charged particles are already in the conductors. Most electrons in a conductor (e. g. copper) are held tightly to their atoms, but each atom in a conductor has a couple of electrons that are loosely held. Since the electrons are negatively charged, an atom that loses an electron is left with a positive charge (since the protons remain), and is called an ion. This means that copper (and all similar conductors) consist of a lattice of ions surrounded by free electrons. The ions can only vibrate in their current state, but the electrons can move randomly throughout the lattice. All metals (conductors) are made this way. When a battery is attached to a metal, the free electrons are repelled by the negative terminal and attracted by the positive one. They still move randomly, but they all move slowly in the same direction with a steady drift velocity. This is a flow of charge, an electric current. Current is measured in Amps (I). A simple circuit through a conductor looks like this: The greater the resistance of a component, the harder it is for charge to flow through it. In a conductor with a higher resistance, the electrons have more collisions with the ions than if they were flowing through a conductor with lower resistance. If there is a potential difference (Voltage, V) across a conductor, a current (Amps, I) goes through it. But when you apply the same potential difference across different conductors, the currents are different. For example, if we put a potential difference of 230V across a kettle and toaster, the current in the kettle is 10A, whereas the current in the toaster is only 5A. The current is smaller in the toaster so it must have a higher resistance. Resistance is measured in ohms (? ) and has this definition: The resistance of a conductor is the ratio of potential difference applied across it, to the current passing through it So the formula for resistance is: Resistance, R = Potential difference across the conductor, V (volts) (? ) Current through the conductor, I (amps) or R = V or V = I R I As the potential difference doubles, so does the current. This means the resistance of a wire is constant. This rule was discovered by Georg Ohm and is true for all metals at a constant temperature. As long as a metal is kept at a constant temperature, the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across it This is ohms law, and it can help us to get good results. There are a number of factors affecting how much resistance a conductor has. They are these: Type of material Different conductors have different levels of resistivity. E. g. Copper has a much lower resistance than nichrome.Ã Length A short wire has less resistance than a long one. The free electrons have to travel a farther distance in the long wire, passing between more ions. This increases the chances of an electron hitting one, therefore there are more collisions, thus a higher resistance.Ã Cross-sectional area A thin wire has more resistance than a thick one. This is simple due to the fact that more electrons can flow through a thicker wire, similar to the way more water can pass through a wider pipe. Temperature In metals, a hot wire has more resistance than a cold one. This is because, as a metal heats up, the ions vibrate more. This increases the chance of them colliding with electrons, thus there is a higher resistance. The resistance of a wire at constant temperature depends on its dimensions, and the material from which it is made. Every material has a property called its resistivity (p). It is measured in ohm metres (? m). The higher the resistivity, the harder it is to charge flow through the material. Conductors have low resistivities and insulators have very high ones. If we know the resistivity, the cross-sectional area and the length of a sample material, we can calculate its resistance thus: Resistance, R = Resistivity, p (? m) x length, l (m) or R = p l (? ) Cross-sectional area, A (m2) A So now that we understand what resistance what are we going to do with it? Why an experiment of course! Im going to be investigating how the length of a wire affects the resistance. I will try passing the same voltage through different lengths of the same wire and see how length affects the resistivity. Prediction I predict that the longer the wire is, the higher the resistance.
